About Coach Toomey

Coaching is more than a profession for Coach Mike Toomey—it is a lifelong passion and a defining part of who he is. With more than 25 years of experience coaching athletes at the high school, collegiate, and open levels, Coach Toomey has built a reputation for developing runners of all abilities and helping them reach their full potential.

Coach Toomey currently works with middle distance and distance runners at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy at the middle school level. He also served as the Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach at George School, where he guided both the girls’ and boys’ programs to strong league and state championship performances. During his tenure, he coached multiple individual state champions and elevated the overall competitiveness of the program. Prior to George School, Coach Toomey spent several years at Kents Hill School in Maine, leading the cross country team to back-to-back New England Championships in 2015 and 2016.

Across his career, Coach Toomey has coached numerous state, regional, and national qualifiers at the high school level. In the open and masters divisions, he has worked with athletes of all backgrounds—from first-time runners to seasoned competitors—and has coached charity teams including the American Cancer Society Miami Marathon Team and the Franklin Park Zoo Boston Marathon Team.

Coach Toomey holds both USA Track & Field Level 1 and Level 2 Endurance certifications. He also previously served as Chairman of USA Track & Field New England, where he focused on expanding access to and enthusiasm for the sport across all ages and ability levels.

Coach Toomey’s own competitive journey began in high school, where he won the State Championship in the Mile and was recognized as a Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic honoree in cross country. He was inducted into his high school Hall of Fame in 2015. He went on to compete at UMass Lowell, contributing to the NCAA XC Championship team in 1991, earning All-American honors, winning the ECAC Steeplechase title in 1992, and serving as team captain for cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track from 1993–1995. He was inducted into the UMass Lowell Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.

After college, Coach Toomey competed for Reebok Boston as a middle-distance runner, training under legendary coach Bob Sevene. He later continued his development in Flagstaff, Arizona, where he had the opportunity to work with renowned coach Jack Daniels. These formative coaching relationships deeply influenced his philosophy, emphasizing consistency, purpose, and long-term athlete development.
